VVPP II: Singing with AI begins spring 2025!

Abstract

The Virtual Voice Performance Project (VVPP) is a groundbreaking combination of music performance and qualitative research. It is designed to allow UND students and faculty to explore and master the intricate realm of virtual audio and video, AI, and other music technology within the context of vocal performance. This project not only seeks to harness the creative potential of virtual vocal performance, but also addresses the logistical challenges and barriers associated with traditional in-person collaborations. VVPP results will be shared through live streamed events, video recordings, interviews, and journal articles.

At its core, VVPP strives to demonstrate new and exciting artistic possibilities for virtual vocal performance, an arena ripe for exploration and growth within the field of vocal music. By providing University of North Dakota (UND) students with the opportunity to engage in collaborative music-making, performing alongside expert solo, operatic, and consort (ensemble) singers, the project democratizes access to world-class musical experiences regardless of geographical constraints.

Furthermore, VVPP aspires to validate the concept and viability of live virtual rehearsals and performances. By emphasizing user-friendliness and minimizing technical and financial prerequisites, the project sets a precedent for the potential offering of virtual voice courses at UND. It positions UND as an institution where music and technology integrate with ease, fostering collaboration between UND students and national music talent.

Beyond its immediate musical implications, this project opens up new vistas for academic and research collaborations. It seeks to demonstrate potential for partnerships between the Music and Computer Science departments, fostering interdisciplinary interactions. Additionally, potential future collaboration with Esports and gaming students and faculty could further enrich the project's creative and technological dimensions.

Ultimately, the Virtual Voice Performance Project aims to elevate UND's national profile as a leader in the innovative use of technology in music performance and music education. By doing so, it not only enhances recruitment efforts but also positions the university as a trailblazer in harnessing the power of technology to expand the horizons of artistic expression and academic exploration.
